In March of 2021, Zapotec Energy finalized the installation of a roof-mounted solar array in Jamaica Plain, MA. The fully ballasted array was installed on top of the 47-unit multipurpose building that was constructed by Jamacia Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) as a LEED certifiable development near Heath Square in Jamacia Plain.

JPNDC is a non-profit organization that focuses on providing affordable housing to Boston residents that “have been excluded from prosperity by an inequitable economic system.” JPNDC has several affordable housing units available throughout the Jamacia Plain area (JPNDC Website).

The 16.8 kW DC system is expected to produce 20,090 kWh in the first year of operation. This energy will feed into the main building’s load. The system will also participate in the SMART program and help offset future electricity costs associated with the main building load (SMART Program).

Construction began in November of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the permitting process for the project was completed fully online via the City of Boston’s recently released permitting and licensing online portal. During the permitting process, a COVID-19 Affidavit and an extensive COVID-19 safety plan was required which Zapotec created and followed very strictly.

The system is comprised of 42 (400W) Hanwha Q-Cell PV modules, one SolarEdge inverter, and Unirac’s RM10 ballasted racking system. Zapotec engineers designed the system and managed the installation and commissioning process of the project. An electrical sub-contractor installed the system under the supervision of Zapotec engineers. Zapotec also managed the interconnection application with Eversource Energy.
