In March of 2021, Zapotec Energy finalized the installation of a roof-mounted solar array in Jamaica Plain, MA. The fully ballasted array was installed on top of the 47-unit multipurpose building that was constructed by Jamacia Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) as a LEED certifiable development near Heath Square in Jamacia Plain. JPNDC is a non-profit organization that focuses on providing affordable housing to Boston residents that “have been excluded from prosperity by an inequitable economic system.” JPNDC has several affordable housing units available throughout the Jamacia Plain area (JPNDC Website). The 16.8 kW DC system is expected to produce 20,090…

Zapotec’s Engineers Finalize Solar Canopy Project in Waltham image
In May of 2019, Zapotec Energy finished the installation of a solar canopy project in Waltham, MA. The solar canopy was installed in the parking lot adjacent to a newly constructed office building at 81 Wyman Street, operated by Hobbs Brook Management (HBM). Previously, the building's parking lot was uncovered and subject to the New England climate. But now, the 682kW solar canopy provides the current tenants of 81 Wyman with approximately 820,000 kWh of clean energy annually and all of the benefits of a covered parking lot. The 81 Wyman street project was led by Columbia Construction Company (CCC).  Zapotec's engineers…

Solar Energy Helps Bentley’s Hockey Arena Become ‘Most Sustainable’ in US image
On June 6, 2018, Bentley University celebrated the fact that its newly constructed Multipurpose Arena received LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) last month. Since the beginning of the project, sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable energy were listed by university officials as top priorities for the development. Bentley’s Multipurpose Arena is the first ice hockey arena to earn LEED Platinum from the USGBC, making it the “most environmentally sustainable” in the country (PR Newswire). To help the Arena reach USGBC’s highest rating, the University partnered with Rivermoor Energy to develop a 504…

Zapotec Completes Final PV System in Project Series for Equity Residential image
Last month, Zapotec Energy finished the fourth solar photovoltaic (PV) system in the recent series of projects contracted by Equity Residential, a real estate and building management company based in Chicago, IL. The 66 kW solar PV system was installed on the roof of Cronin’s Landing, an apartment building located at 25 Crescent Street in Waltham, MA. The system is expected to produce 79,500 kWh of electricity during its first year of operation. Similarly to the PV system at Longview Place Apartments, the system at Cronin’s Landing is made up of 203 (325W) Hanwha Q-Cell PV modules, three SolarEdge inverters…

Zapotec Rolls Out Two More Solar PV Projects for Equity Residential image
Zapotec welcomes the spring season by completing two more rooftop solar energy systems at Longview Place Apartments in Waltham, MA. Through another contract with Equity Residential, a real estate and building management company headquartered in Chicago, IL, Zapotec’s team of engineers finished a 73.5 kW system at 60 Hope Avenue and an 80.6 kW system at 70-80 Hope Avenue. Although each rooftop hosts its own array of solar panels, the PV systems at 70-80 Hope Avenue are electrically combined before feeding into the buildings’ switchgear. Altogether, the PV systems at Longview Place are expected to produce 197,400 kWh of electricity each…

MLK School: A Green Role Model for Cambridge image
A giant science project: The City of Cambridge has been working hard to incorporate green building into its development plans. A recent example of this effort can be seen in the rebuilding of the City’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School. In fact, the developers initially intended for the MLK School to be one of the first net zero facilities in Cambridge. To be considered net zero, the building must produce the same amount of energy as it consumes each year. Although the MLK School’s energy budget did not allow the building to reach its net…

After 11 Years, Solar Inverter at MIT Is Ready to Be Replaced image
In December 2004, Zapotec Energy was hired as a designer and system integrator to complete a 12.6 kW solar PV system on the roof of MIT building 14, more commonly referred to as the Hayden Library. While Zapotec provided the PV designs, MIT electricians led the installation on the roof of the library as well as other similar systems throughout the MIT campus. The system at Hayden Library is one of four solar PV systems that Zapotec has designed for the Institute. Last week, the design engineers at Zapotec, including CEO Paul Lyons, helped replace a PV inverter at Hayden Library.  Initially,…
