Zapotec’s Engineers Tackle Microgrids with Help from HOMER Energy, LLC image
Microgrid: “A group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. A Microgrid can connect and disconnect from the grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected or island-mode.” – US Department of Energy The buzz about microgrids has been around for several years, but development has been stuck in a stage of ideation. The high cost of energy storage and the success of grid-direct solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have made most projects impractical– until now. The combination of declining…

When Is the Best Time to Go Solar? image
When deciding whether or not to invest in solar energy it is important to consider several different factors. First, the best time to add solar to your building is during new construction, renovation or re-roofing. Having a brand new roof gives you an advantage when installing solar PV panels. Today, solar panels are warrantied to operate for at least 25 years, which means that you want to make sure your roof will not need to be replaced in the short-term. Ideally, installations are the most cost-effective on roofs that are less than five years old or more than 20 years old, in…
